Ask not for whom the cat texts. He texts for thee.
Stavros George Zolnerovich thinks his family has some serious screws loose. They keep talking about Russian fairy tale characters and spooks as if they are real. Everyone knows that Baba Yaga, Koschai the Deathless and Chernobog do not exist. Steve also thinks his sister, Catherine, needs to stop pretending that Ivan the cat is sending text messages. College is hard, working two jobs is harder, and Steve's car needs a new heater as of three weeks ago.
When those fairy tales kidnap Steve and Ivan, Peter and Catherine Zolnerovich must call on all their knowledge, strength, and a few old debts in order to save their brother. But will it be enough? Pulled into the realm of Russian legends, even the children of the Soldier's Son may have met their match.
(A stand-alone novella, 30,000 words.)

Ivan the Purrable and the Twelfth Dancing Princess An Alexi Tale Novella eBook Alma Boykin Reviews
Disclaimer I obtained this book through the Unlimited Program. Therefore, even though i paid for the book, and the author was paid as well, I am not counted as a Verified Purchaser. Mildly aggravating.
I found Alma T C Boykin through her stunning series about Elizabeth (Colplatschki Chronicles), the tough lady of no apparent beauty who rides a killer mule, and conquers evil though force of will and some really great combat skills, combined with superior talent for leading troops. I almost want a tattoo.
And then I picked up some short stories. "When Fossils Meet" Do NOT attempt to eat or drink anything while reading the story, or you will snort it all over your keyboard.
About a year ago, I think, she started a new series Baba Yaga's hut is walking in Colorado. I read it while listening to Emerson,Lake, and Palmer doing 'Pictures at an Exhibition.' Delightful.
So, I confuse myself. How did I lose my way for a year? I have no explanation for most of it, but there WERE some technical difficulties. But ya know what? They would have been easier if I had been reading her stuff; yeah, they are that good.
But, as a result, I missed a certain number of stories in the series. NO PROBLEM! I mean it, this story picks up with a third son, OBVIOUS significant backstory I missed after 'When Chicken Feet Cross the Road,' and it really doesn't matter; all it does is tell me I've got some good stuff to fill in.
I was hooked by the title. Cat person that I am, the name 'Ivan the Purrable' is a name with meaning. And this Ivan sends text messages, in an attempt to guide the third child of the father. Unfortunately, the third child, going by the name of 'Steve" (the 'going by' part is important), fails to heed the warnings and instructions provided by the cat. He has three opportunities to build himself some help, and misses all three chances due to failure to follow-through. He's not a total loser, though; after being imprisoned, nearly strangled, and whipped unmercifully, he IS able to learn. Therefore, when his First and Second siblings show up to rescue him, he doesn't behave so stupidly that the reader wants him to die for sheer failure to learn. Of this, I am truly grateful. I HATE those stories where the prisoner never learns.
I am only SLIGHTLY informed with respect to the Eastern European mythology that provides the background for this and related stories. Doesn't really matter. It's very, very east to research the characters while reading, if you want to. When I read "Chicken" I was doing that, as well as listening to ELP. Didn't need to this time around, and I loved it.
I am SO looking forward to filling in the parts I've missed!
The stories in this series are not long enough.
I love this mythology. Please combine into one volume. Thank you for these.
I enjoyed this novella. Even without having read the previous novels in this universe it was quite understandable.
